The hunt for the perfect coat. The fit, fabric, details, and design need to be just right for as many outfit scenarios as you can imagine – work, after work, date nights, girls nights, parties, weekends, weddings. But when you find it, they stay with you and survive trends, personal style updates, jobs, a baby, and everything in between.
My coat inspiration? I turn to the It Girls and the classic coats that keep them warm. From Sienna and Jane to Clemence and Kate, here are 8 classic coats It Girls love and every girl should have in their closet.
SIENNA MILLER: THE LEOPARD COAT
Don’t shy from a wild pattern for your classic coat. Leopard coats have been a show stopping It Girl staple for decades because it’s the perfect statement coat for any occasion. Tossed over jeans and a easy white tee or paired with a body hugging black dress, the classic leopard coat takes our look from good to glam, just like that. Just ask my all-time It Girl, Sienna.
JANE BIRKIN: THE NAVY PEACOAT
A classic coat doesn’t get any dreamier than a navy peacoat with handsome gold buttons. It adds that romantic Left Bank It Girl vibe or a polished prep New England attitude. Pair it with striped anything, skinny or bell bottom jeans, that perfect cashmere turtleneck, and Black (navy + black = the BEST color combo. Just ask Rag + Bone).
KATE BOSWORTH: THE TRENCH COAT
Burberry built an empire on this timeless classic coat…and It girls from every era share the same love. From Brigette Bardot to the always on point Kate Bosworth, the classic trench coat is a jet setter’s staple, a stylish rainy day answer, and a must for every #WorkBoss.
TAYLOR THOMASI HILL: THE MILITARY PARKA
Lazy weekends, the Grunge revival, utility lovers – Military Parkas have stood the test of trends and time. I might have 4+ military parkas because this classic coat style is my jam. Add this articulated number to your sweeter style picks, too – dresses, skirts, flowy and floral things – for the ultimate It Girl ensemble.
CLEMENCE POESY: THE LEATHER MOTO JACKET
Who said leather was for tough chicks? Leather moto jackets are not only insanely warm, but they add the much needed juxtaposition to our girlier looks – floral prints, lace anything, airy silk tops and dresses, fuzzy sweaters. Channel your inner badass with your perfect leather moto jacket and your closet won’t be the same without it.
KARLIE KLOSS: THE DUSTER COAT
The Duster Coat is just a fancy fashion name for “Long Coat.” LOL. We just love dreaming up fabulous names for ordinary words. The duster craze has been going strong for the last two years, with its elegant, slim silhouette and minimal style. For yours truly, dark charcoal grey duster classic coats are my idea of perfection.
OLIVIA PALERMO: THE SWING COAT
The Swing silhouette popped into the fashion scene in the 60’s with its slim on top, flowy/A-line esque on bottom signature. I obsess over swing coats because their slim fitting upper design makes every girl look slim and feminine and ready for anything. Check out Olivia Palermo’s black number above and start hunting for your new Swing Coat.
BLAKE LIVELY: THE POP COLOR COAT
Pop colored classic coats are worthy for any closet, just for their head turning powers alone. From siren red to chartreuse to emerald – wear a colored coat and I guarantee you’ll get stopped on the street. For 2016, I’m daydreaming of Pantone’s Colors of the Year, inspired by Blake’s breathtaking powder blue number.
