Sundance (Film Fest) and Winter Storm Jonas blew through the weekend with a mighty cloak of white and a puffer-clad army set to catch snowflakes and build their very own Olafs. When the weather gods deal us an icy card, it’s easy for us to default to our usual commuter snow boots, hat, and the tired black, ankle length puffer coat that makes us feel, well, just that. Puffy. Why bother making an effort if the world looks like a snow globe outside our window?

Because Snow Days are magic! And also, with a few of the right snow day essentials, it’s easy to hurl snowballs and sled in a stylish, comfy, and super warm winter outfit. Simply stock your winter closet with these snow essentials and – poof – you’ll never reach for that tired puffy coat again.

Chunky Knit Beanie with Oversized Pom Pom

Thermal Leggings (Merino is awesome)

Long, Layerable Turtleneck (Preferably Cashmere Blends)

Cozy Boot Socks (Marled or with Cute Patterns)

Skinny Stripe Sweater (My Current Current Fave)

Legit Snow Boots (Ahem, Sorel)

Fuzzy Sweaters

Slim Fit & Long Length Puffer Jacket

Punchy Colored Wellies

Flannel Coat (Duffle or w/ a Cozy Collar)

And while I can only admire these awesome snow days from the mild Cali coast, I’ll be packing these winter faves for our annual Lake Tahoe ski weekend. We have to get up there soon and make our very own Olaf with our little snow angel, T.

  1. Love wearing cozy boot socks. Visited home during Christmas in Wisconsin and was able to enjoy the snow a little but I’m glad I’m back in the south. Although, snow globe snow is very lovely!

  3. I’m like the last person to ask about winter essentials. I like in Upstate NY – we usually get a ton of snow. I wear boots and a peacoat, but hate hats, gloves and earmuffs. I only started wearing a scarf in the past 2 years.

Amen to the puffer jacket! Living in Maine, LL Bean Boots are a must, and I also always have a big cowl on. I feel like if my neck is warm the rest of me is warm 🙂 Love the leggings!

I just bought some rain boots similar to the ones you pictured. We recently moved to some acreage, and the grass was really dead when we bought it since it was a repo. Of course, I’m just now realizing that means that between each snow storm when the ground decides to thaw, it’s a muddy mess. My kids think that’s fabulous– not so much for me!

  16. Such fun pictures. Here in Kansas City, we’ve only had about two inches of snow all winter so we’re missing out..
